Your breakfast basket at Chão do Rio has everything you need to prepare a comforting and tasty breakfast. You’ll certainly be feeling energetic enough to explore the region. To introduce you to some of the local gastronomic delights, we’ve selected for you:
Bread baked in a wood oven…
Made in the Travancinha bakery, delicious on toast, or fresh, with cream cheese and pumpkin jam, or just with butter, when it is delivered, warm, to your door at 5 pm. You won't forget it!
Serra Cheese / or cured sheep's cheese…
Serra cheese has a unique flavor and texture. With bread baked in a wood-fired oven and pumpkin jam, it is a real feast. However, fresh sheep's milk is not always in season, so in the warmer months we replace the cheese with cured sheep's cheese. The famous Serra da Estrela cheese needs no introduction.
Pumpkin Jam…
It is made by Mrs. Emília, with pumpkins from her garden. Made in bite-sized pieces, you will love it. Serra da Estrela Honey… With a taste of rosemary or heather, you can tell the difference between Serra da Estrela honey and honey.
Loriga’s Black Cake…
"This recipe from Loriga is thought to be over 150 years old. It is a unique cake, with an unmistakable flavour and texture, original in shape and dark colour. “Its probable origin is thought to be linked to the English “colony” living in Loriga between the mid-19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, due to its similarity to the shape of a typical English cake and which is traditionally served with tea, a drink that is also deeply rooted in the area." Delicious, plain or on toast with butter, you'll love it with tea or coffee, which you can also find at your Chão do Rio home.
Fresh eggs…
These are from our removable chicken coop. Because our chickens are happy, our eggs are delicious.
To make your breakfast more nutritious and healthy, we have also chosen homemade muesli and seasonal fruit, which you can enjoy on its own or in a fruit salad. Or you can even make fresh orange juice with the oranges that we always leave in your fruit bowl (you can find a juicer in your kitchen).
Of course, we also provide all the other essentials, such as yogurt, butter, smoked chicken or turkey ham, which are not only healthier, but also tastier.
The milk and Flemish cheese come from the happy cows of the Azores and are therefore tastier.
And for your little ones, you can also find chocolate powder, milk bread, homemade biscuits and nectars made from national fruit.
As for the water, that's from Serra da Estrela, of course!

We have chosen for you the Protected Designation of Origin Cheese Serra da Estrela from "São Gião" farm; the “Bolo Negro” (black cake) made in Loriga by “Loripão”; the cookies made in the "Casa Santa Isabel"; the olive from “Cobral”; honey extracted by the artisan “Dulce Gouveia”; and Dão wines, such as the "Quinta do Escudial".

Rita's slippers “Chinelos d’Avó”, or the aromatic handmade soaps made by "Sósabão", both good examples of how you can innovate in tradition…, or knitted socks with wool from Serra da Estrela sheep, made by "Wonatur", or small pieces wood carved with enthusiasm by the young people of "Casa Santa Isabel"… and other articles made of rags, or wooden logs, like bases for pots, or our candlesticks … so that you can take them home and thus prolong the memory of your experience in the region and in Chão do Rio!
